30 years ago, French and American Scooped Up Soviet Weapons in Chad

During the so-called Toyota War in 1987, forces loyal to Chadian president Hissene Habre fought the Libyan army … and won.

In early January 1987, Chadian troops carried out a devastating attack on the city of Fada, killing 784 Libyan troops and capturing six SF.260 light strike planes, one Mi-25 gunship, 13 T-55 tanks, 118 BMP-1 armored vehicles, one P-15/Flat Face radar and 81 soldiers. In addition, the Chadians shot down a Mi-25 on Jan. 4 and a MiG-23 on Jan. 5.

All that captured equipment represented a potential intelligence boon for the United States. As the fighting died down, the Pentagon went shopping in Chad.

The Libyan National Army Is Running Out of Air Power

The Libyan National Army Air Force — part of the eastern-based Tobruk regime, one of two competing governments in Libya — lost two fighter-bombers and an experienced pilot in fewer than two weeks. A MiG-21 shot down over the Al Sabri district in Benghazi and a second MiG-21 that crashed near Tobruk after a mission to Derna, killing the commander of Gamal Abdul El Nasser air base.

The LNA/AF, under the command of Gen. Khalifa Haftar, also lost a Mi-35 gunship helicopter that the air arm abandoned at Ras Lanouf air base during a militant attack — and then destroyed. The losses have sharply reduced the LNA/AF’s combat capability as it battles western-based Misrata militants who are determined to hold Libya’s central oil crescent.

"Libyan airstrikes" situation update 2 - 8 July 2016

Very little communication on air strikes this week from GNA affiliated Air Force, but many were performed each day. The main information from the LNA Air Force side, is the lost of one of its two MiG-23BNs (probably serial number '4136') and especially one of its most experienced pilots, colonel Idriss Al Obeidi well known for his low pass onboard Floggers.

Shortly before, the GNA Air Force performed five successful airstrikes in Al Gardabiya, Abu Hadi and south of Sirte. Libyan fighter jets carried out five other strikes against concentrations of ISIS militants in the vicinity of runway 17. Another five strikes were made against militants fleeing from Al Gardabiya airbase, bringing the number of offensive sorties to ten.

New MiG-21s and Mi-8s for Libyan National Army Air Force

Sunday, March 6th, 2016, a formation of six new MiG-21s and six new Mi-8s arrived at Gamal Abdel Nasser airbase near Tobruk according to Libyan National Army Air Force pilot officer. The origin of these aircrafts is not yet known, but suspicion focused on Egypt, which has already delivered at least eleven Mi-8Ts and seven MiG-21MFs which we must add the numerous spare parts for the maintenance of the fleets of "Fishbed". On the three first photos below, the Mi-8s are seen flying over Tobruk. On the fourth pictures, we can notice that the Egyptian serial, flag and roundel are hidden. The Libyan National Army Air Force has now in its inventory 26 fighter jets : 23 MiG-21s, one MiG-23ML, one Su-22UM, one Mirage F1AD; the Libyan National Army Aviation has 27 helicopters : five Mi-35s, 21 M-8s and one Mi-171.
