Iraqi Air Power Reborn: The Iraqi Air Arms Since 2004

In 2003, the Iraqi Air Force has been almost entirely decimated by coalition air strikes and during the insurgency that followed. Baghdad had to rebuild its air power from scratch. This book summarizes the history of the Iraqi Air Force and Iraqi Army Aviation until 2003 before detailing the acquiring of new training, reconaissance, attack and fighter aircrafts and helicopters squadrons. The last part details the combats of the new Iraqi Air Force and Iraqi Army Aviation against local and foreign insurgents, including the so-called Islamic State. A map of all current Iraqi air bases complements the comprehensive photographic coverage and a detailed order of battle is included, together with squadron patches and artworks (drawn by Tom Cooper). A full list is provided of aircraft serial numbers and attrition to all causes since 2004.

Africa@War 22: Libyan Air Wars Part 3: 1986-1989

Confrontations between Libya, and the USA and France reached their highest point in the period between April 1986 and early 1989. In response to a Libyan-instigated and supported series of terror attacks against US citizens and interests in Europe, in April 1986 the USA launched Operation El Dorado Canyon. Simultaneously, the USA and France bolstered the military of the Chadian government, enabling it to subsequently launch an all-out advance against Libyan troops and proxy forces in the north of Libya. This culminated in the series of spectacular campaigns better known as ‘Toyota Wars’, characterized by high speed of operations and surprise. The Chadian Army defeated its opponents in 1987 successfully concluding this conflict. This title closes the Libyan Air Wars mini-series with a detailed insight into the final US–Libyan confrontation, which took place in early 1989, and culminated in another high-profile air combat between the most modern jet fighters of the Libyan Arab Air Force, and the US Navy.

Africa@War 21: Libyan Air Wars Part 2: 1985-1986

The second volume in this mini-series is covering the period of US-Libyan - and Franco-Libyan - aerial confrontations in 1985 and 1986. Tensions between these three parties were tense already since earlier times, but these tensions never went as high as in February and March, thirty years ago. The USN run two successive exercises off the Libyan coast, in January and February 1986, trying to provoke Libyans into an open confrontation. In reaction to what it saw a threat of renwed Libyan invasion of Chad, France then bombed Wadi Doum and then launched its next intervention in Chad, Operation Epervier. Finally, US Navy returned for its third successive exercise off the Libyan coast, in late March 1986. This 'freedom of navigation' exercise culminated in a series of clashes between US Navy, Libyan air defences and Naval forces.

Africa@War 19: Libyan Air Wars Part 1: 1973-1985

This is the first in three volumes of this mini-series. It contains a detailed description of air wars fought over and around Libya (including Chad), in the 1970s and 1980s. The story starts with the usual introduction to history of Libya, continues with turbulent times of dramatic changes in Libyan political landscape following September 1969 coup that brought Moammar el-Qaddafi to power, and then goes over to events in Chad of the late 1960s and early 1970s. It traces the rapid expansion of the Libyan Arab Air Force to big extension , French aerial operations in Chad, and kind of culminates with a detailled break-down of US Navy's operations off Libya in 1980 and particularly in August 1981.
